Gone Tonight by Sarah Pekkanen

Gone Tonight by Sarah Pekkanen, co-author of four of the best thrillers I’ve ever read, released her first solo thriller in August of 2023. Gone Tonight didn’t disappoint. It was unique, twisty, dual-narrated thriller where both narrators are somewhat unreliable and the reader is left in suspense, uncovering clues that lead to an unexpected ending. I gave this book an enthusiastic four stars.

I downloaded the audiobook on Libby, and was excited to see that it was narrated by Kate Mara, one of my favorite actresses.

Thank you to my public library for free access to this great audiobook! Visit your local library today – the more you read, the more funding they receive.

Sarah Pekkanen has co-authored four books with Greer Hendricks, and they’re four of the best thrillers I have ever read.

You Are Not Alone (I reviewed it in 2021 here and gave it five stars), The Wife Between Us, An Anonymous Girl, and The Golden Couple – all are masterpieces of plot and twists.

Gone Tonight by Sarah Pekkanen

From the beginning, it’s clear that Ruth Sterling is over-protective and is hiding something. She’s clear about that. Her daughter Catherine, is about to move away after a lifetime of financial struggle and instability, and Ruth simply won’t let that happen. She’s hiding a huge secret, and Catherine is in more danger than she could imagine.

Catherine begins to figure out that something is wrong, and when she does find out, she’s dug too far and it might be too late. I don’t want to spoil anything, here, so I’ll just say that she’s onto Ruth, but neither of them really expected what was going to happen next.

As a reader, when one of the main characters comes out and admits, hey, I AM lying about this and that, then you know there is a lot more coming. If every character revealed their deceptions, those are clearly distractions to keep you from finding out what’s really going on. I really enjoy this cat and mouse and Pekkanen is really excellent at it.

Gone Tonight Audiobook Narration by Kate Mara

Kate Mara does a great job as the narrator of both Ruth and Catherine’s characters. She’s got a unique voice and I hope to hear more narration from her in the future! I downloaded the audiobook for free on Libby, but you can listen on Audible, as well.

What would you do if your husband suddenly wanted to rewrite all of the rules of your relationship? This is the question at the heart of Skipping a Beat, Pekkanen’s thought-provoking second book.

But in those lost minutes he becomes a different man. Money is meaningless to him—and he wants to give it all away. Julia, who sees bits of her life reflected in scenes from the world’s great operas, is now facing with a choice she never anticipated.
