Today’s spotlight is the Pink Nanouk Tradescantia, once upon a time referred to as “Wandering Jew” – a stunningly beautiful plant with waxy, firm leaves. I treat my pink nanouk like a child. I even bought her a special matching pink ceramic planter and I am notorious for reusing or painting old planters. I hadn’t bought a new one in years, but a special plant like this required a special outfit!
Tradescantia are an excellent option for new plant owners and they come in so many beautiful varieties. This particular variety was created in a lab in the Netherlands with the goal of creating a hardy variety with beautiful colors and flowers*.
Care instructions:
Place Pink Nanouk near a window with bright, indirect light. I’ve got mine next to a wall-to ceiling east facing window and it’s thriving – she grew three new leaves this month! If the plant does not get enough light, the color on the leaves will fade.
Keep the soil moist. As you can see in the photograph, I keep the topsoil moist but not saturated. She is inside a sunroom and will require more water in the Texas summer than during the winter. Water around the edge of the plant to avoid root rot. Do not overwater. Do not overwater.
Mist about every other day – she loves humidity! If you’ve got her inside, you may want to take her into the bathroom with you when you shower. If you do that, you can go ahead and buy yourself a “Crazy Plant Person” coffee mug, but the plant will love it.
I purchased my plant from Hirt’s Garden on Amazon.com (see link below) – and I received a 2.5 inch pot with three propagations that were very healthy and fast growing. In their care instructed, they suggested using a half-diluted fertilizer about every month.
My favorite thing about cultivating houseplants is when they have babies and I can repot them and give them to friends. I can’t wait to see how large this beautiful plant will grow!
