Houseplant Spotlight: Prayer Plant

Marantacae

My Marantaceae – the Red Prayer Plant – sprouted a beautiful purple flower.

Imagine my surprise when I entered the sunroom recently and found a beautiful, delicate flower growing out of my favorite plant. This red prayer plant was four leaf cuttings when I purchased it from an etsy shop last December. The plant has been a prolific grower. I’ve watered lightly about once a week, whenever the soil seems dry, and fertilized with diluted organic plant food every two months. The plant has thrived in mild temperatures around 45-85 degrees and lots of indirect light.

I did not even know that this plant flowered. Of all my plants, this is the fastest growing and my favorite. Yes, I love my Tradescantia Zebrina and my Pink Nanouk Tradescantia – also easy to grow and hard to kill. With this plant, the leaves look like they’ve been hand-painted. It’s called a prayer plant because the leaves often bend at the stem, but the name fits. The leaves look as if they were painted on by an angel.

It’s hard to take a picture of this flower and get a focus with the beautiful, rich colors on the leaves, so I’ve included a few photographs.
